Suprise! – Gengahr release a new EP ahead of their UK and European tour.
Comprised of three songs that were recorded during sessions for their debut album A Dream Outside, this EP also forms part of an expanded deluxe edition of the album (out now) that features favourite b-side Haunter and a cover of Fugazi’s I’m So Tired.
The title track, live favourite Tired Eyes, gave the band the opportunity to work with producer/mixer Nicolas Vernhes (Deerhunter, The War On Drugs, Animal Collective). Front man Felix Bushe said “We have been huge admirers of Nicholas Vernhes and all the incredible records he has produced and recorded. It was a real dream come true to find that he was a fan of what we were doing and be given the opportunity to work together and a song of ours.” This song highlights the clever interplay between Bushe’s wistful vocals and the meandering guitar riffs where, at points, the two seem to melt together.
Fade to Black is carried along by a toe-tapping drum beat and sparkling guitars into a wall of distortion. After a long, fuzzy instrumental crescendo Loki gives Bushe’s vocals centre stage while the addictive guitar hook initiates spontaneous swaying.
There’s nothing tired about the tracks on this EP. Despite not making it onto the debut album, these songs all have a slightly different sound to that release and work really well together. This actually feels like a step forward for a band that continues to be pleasantly surprising.
