Girl Ray announce their eagerly awaited debut headline tour and share an ode to friendship with new track Don’t Go Back At Ten.
The North London trio – comprising Poppy Hankin (guitar/vocals), Iris McConnell (drums) and Sophie Moss (bass) – recently announced details of their highly anticipated debut album Earl Grey (out 4 August via Moshi Moshi), but we’ve been itching for tour news. On the back of three appearances at Glastonbury, they now have a full run of their own UK dates (and a performance at Latitude Festival) to share, as well as another track from their forthcoming release.
New song Don’t Go Back At Ten is another gorgeous example of their dreamy indie-pop, with Hankin’s distinctive, angelic and skyscraping – but also rich and deep – vocals carried on a wave of lo-fi guitars and melting harmonies. If you’ve ever had a close friend who, despite your best efforts to send that ill-advised text or in general hit the self-destruct button, is the voice of reason and the support you need you’ll definitely relate to the lyrics of Don’t Go Back At Ten – “She said: “Don’t take this out on yourself”…“don’t you dare”.
Hankin said about the new single: “After a break-up I was super low, and as clichéd and teen-movie as it sounds, it was truly my friends who got me through it, making sure that I didn’t just mope about the whole time eating pots of cottage cheese and crying. I guess I wrote this one to cheer myself up in a way. Not many of the songs on the album are happy but this one is, kinda!”
Theirs is a wonderfully warm and nostalgic sound and Don’t Go Back At Ten is the music equivalent of that comforting friend.
