London based three-piece Dream Wife prove they’re a riot grrl fantasy with the lead single from their debut EP.
Hey Heartbreaker opens with a tantalizingly long riff before Rakel Mjöll’s sugar-frosted vocals kick in, reminding me of Liela Moss from The Duke Spirit at her most sultry. Then the snarling chorus, “hey hey hey” shouted backing vocals and hand clapping brings in elements of The Runaways and Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
This track quickly ascends into a punk rock riot that just makes you want to pogo around. When it ends, after what feels much less than its 3 minutes and 33 seconds, I find myself starting it all over again before repeating this process about ten times. It’s new music at its addictive best. Dream Wife’s eponymous EP will be released on 11th March 2016 through Cannibal Hymns, and the band will play a special headline show to promote the release on the same day at London’s Birthdays.
Catch them now because I promise they’re going to be delighting much larger venues soon.
